Resolve a Drive Update Issue

There are a few issues that can prevent a drive from updating in Backblaze Computer Backup. This article provides the most common instances and how to correct them. If none of the below conditions apply and you still have issues backing up your drive, contact the Support team.
Verify the Connections
- Ensure that the drive is physically connected to your computer.
- Open the Backblaze Client Preferences (Mac)/Control Panel (Windows).
- Click Settings, and select the Settings tab.
- In the Select Hard Drives for Backup section, ensure that your drive is listed.
- If the drive is not selected or is listed as "unplugged," select the drive.
- Click OK.
Connect Additional Drives
If you select multiple drives for backup, but not all of them are currently connected to the computer, this may impact your other drives' ability to back up. If the Backblaze Client attempts to back up files that are located on a disconnected drive, this can prevent a connected drive from backing up. If you can, connect all of the drives to your computer.
Reactivate the Drive
If the drive is not one that you frequently save files to or make changes to because it is mostly archival, it may be considered inactive. In this instance, save a file (for example, a small .txt file) to trigger that drive to back up.
Configure the Backup Schedule
Backblaze offers three different backup schedule options. Ensure that the backup schedule that you selected allows the drive to back up.

Enable Full Disk Access
For macOS 10.14 and newer, you must enable full disk access for your external drives.
- For instructions to enable full disk access, see Install the Backup Client for macOS 10.14 and Newer.
- For instructions to allow Backblaze to back up external drives, see Connect External Hard Drives (macOS 10.15 and Newer).
Disable Time Machine
Time Machine drives are excluded from Backblaze Computer Backup by default.
If you do not want this drive to be used for Time Machine, and you want to back it up to Backblaze, you can Disable Time Machine. You can also Partition a Time Machine Drive.
