    Article summary

Backblaze Computer Backup backs up all of your data across all of the user profiles that are on your computer when you install the Backup Client. Computer Backup is designed to scan your drives once an hour for any new or changed files and update your backup with those files. Backblaze may encounter a file that is in use by another application, or it has restrictive permissions. In either scenario, that file is added to a list and Computer Backup attempts to back up the list of skipped files during the next hourly scan.

    Locate Skipped Files

    1. Open the Backup Client for your specific operating system.
    2. Click Settings.
    3. Select the Reports tab.
    4. Select Files Scheduled for Backup from the dropdown menu.

    Skipped File Error Messages

The following messages may be returned for skipped files.

    Error MessageDescription
BZ_FILE_PERMANENT_DOES_NOT_EXISTA file on your computer that was scanned by the Backup Client was scheduled for backup, but the file no longer existed when the backup was initiated.

Ensure that the file that you want to back up is located on your computer.
    BZ_FILE_PERMANENT_BAD_PERMISSIONS

A file that was selected for backup has permissions that do not allow the Backup Client to read and write to the system. This permission can also apply to the parent folder or the entire drive.

Ensure that your file does not have restrictive permissions. For more information about permissions, click here.
    BZ_FILE_TEMPORARY_FILE_BUSY

A file that was scanned by the Backup Client was scheduled for backup, but the file was in use by another application when the backup was initiated.

Ensure that the file that you want to back up is not open or in use by another application.
    BZ_FILE_PERMANENT_FILE_NOT_ON_DRIVE

A file on your drive that was scanned by the Backup Client was scheduled for backup, but the file no longer existed when the backup was initiated.

Ensure that the file that you want to back up is located on your drive.
    BZ_FILE_TEMPORARY_DRIVE_UNPLUGGED

A file that was scanned by the Backup Client was scheduled for backup, but the drive on which the file was located could not be found when the backup was initiated.

Ensure that your drives are connected to your computer.
    BZ_FILE_TEMPORARY_NOT_ENOUGH_TMP_SPACE

There was insufficient space on your temporary data drive when a backup was initiated. Backblaze Computer Backup is designed to back up files that are larger than 100MB. The file is copied in 10 MB chunks to a temporary Backblaze folder (that is one times the space of the file). Each chunk is checksummed (fingerprinted), packaged, and prepared for transfer (that is up to 0.1 times the space of the original file but typically less). Then, each chunk is transmitted and after all of the pieces are transmitted and confirmation is received from the servers, the chunks are deleted from the temporary Backblaze folder and the next file is processed. Alternatively, a temporary data drive is available in the Backblaze settings. If you have a secondary drive with more free space than your boot drive, you can set Backblaze to write to that drive rather than your boot drive.

Ensure that your computer or your selected Temporary Data Drive has enough space to accommodate the size of your backed up files. For more information about how to set a Temporary Data Drive, click here.
