Enable and Disable Two-Factor Verification

Backblaze Computer Backup supports two-factor verification to provide an extra layer of security for your account. This may involve:
- Time-based one-time password (TOTP) (for example, Google Authenticator)
- Verification using a short message service (SMS) text message
- One-time use codes (optional fallback option)
The SMS option is available only after the first account payment is successfully processed (typically after 30 days). Two-factor verification is not available for accounts that use single sign-on (SSO).
Enable Two-Factor Verification
- Sign in to the Backblaze web console.
- In the user menu in the upper-right corner of the page, select My Settings.
- Under Security, click Sign In Settings.
- In the dialog, enable Two-Factor Authentication and click Update.
- Select the two-factor verification method that you want to use.
- Select SMS to authenticate with a text message. This option is available only if you added a phone number to your account in your settings.
- Select Authentication Application to authenticate with TOTP. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to set up the two-factor application. If you also want to use SMS as a backup option, enable Allow fallback to SMS.
- To generate one-time use codes as a fallback option, enable Generate backup codes.
A list of 10 backup codes is displayed that you can use to access your account if the primary two-factor verification method fails. Store these codes in a safe place. - Click Update.
After you set up two-step verification, you are signed out of the Backblaze website.
The next time that you sign in to Backblaze, you must use your new two-step verification method. If you selected the option to generate one-time use codes as a fallback option, you can use these codes to sign in by clicking the Use Backup Code link that appears on the Two-Factor Verification screen when you sign in. Since only 10 of these codes are generated for your account, you should use them only as a last resort if you are unable to gain access to your account using the primary two-factor verification method.
Disable Two-Factor Verification
- Sign in to the Backblaze web console.
- In the user menu in the upper-right corner of the page, select My Settings.
- Under Security, click Sign In Settings.
- Select Never (two-factor authentication is off).
- Click Update.
A warning dialog appears to alert you that your authentication application code will no longer work and that you should also delete the authentication application account.
